Purchased & Referred Care
Purchased & Referred Care (PRC)
Medical/dental care provided at an IHS or tribal health care facility is called Direct Care. The PRC Program is for medical/dental care provided away from an IHS or tribal health care facility. PRC is not an entitlement program and an IHS referral does not imply the care will be paid. If PRC is requested to pay, then a patient must meet the residency eligibility requirements, notification requirements, medical priority, and use of alternate resources.
PRC is a restricted federal program of managed care. It is designed to provide for the purchase of a limited number of services not available at our clinic, in accordance to special priorities or levels of needed services. Examples of such services would be referrals to other medical and dental specialists, comprehensive radiology tests and emergency room visits. Please contact the PRC Department at (530) 625-4261, Ext. 0348.
Contract Health Eligibility Requirements
K'ima:w Medical Center (KMC) is able to assist qualified American Indian and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) with specialty care not offered on-site, when referred by their KMC Primary Care Provider (PCP). KMC is able to provide this service through funds granted by Indian Health Services (IHS) for Purchased & Referred Care. PRC has historically been called Contract Health Services (CHS) and the terms are used interchangeably.
K'ima:w Medical Center Policy determines a potentially qualified CHS AI/AN as someone who:
- Is an enrolled member of a Federally Recognized Tribe of California or a descendent of a member of a Federally recognized tribe of California (staff must be able to verify), or a minor legally residing in a qualified AI/AN household (verification must be provider)
And - Resides within the CHS delivery area and able to show proof of residency. Residency is both the physical residency and the intent to remain permanently
And - Is registered as a KMC client and has been referred by a KMC Provider
And - Has screened with Patient Benefits for Alternate Resources
There may be other special circumstances that might qualify someone for PRC assistance. If you are unsure if you qualify, contact the KMC PRC Staff.
Gas Voucher/Travel Assistance
The intent of the Gas Voucher/Travel Assistance policy is to help offset costs incurred by the patient, as a means to facilitate access to outside appointments. Gas Vouchers and Travel Assistance funds are not intended to fully meet the cost of travel incurred by the patient. To be eligible for Gas Voucher or Travel Assistance for Purchased and Referred Care (PRC) funds, patients must be PRC eligible. Please contact the PRC Department at (530) 625-4261, Ext. 0358.
